The main street in Annascaul boasts in having no fewer than seven pubs and only two shops. This is an indication of a good social scene. Passing through the village, one will note it's smart and tidy layout. Then seeing the "South Pole Inn", an historic link comes to mind. It is of course that of the famous Antarctic explorers Scott and Shackleton.
Locally known as the "Unsung Hero", Tom Crean played a vital part in several expeditions under both Scott and Shackleton. After retiring from the naval service, Crean returned to his home town to set up what is now the "South Pole Inn". He is fondly remembered through an exhibition of spectacular Antarctic photographs in the pub and is also commemorated by a bronze statue across the road.
